In 1903, Bernard immigrated to America. Like his father, he had worked as a tailor in a tiny village in western Poland. His only trade was tailoring, therefore he looked for work doing something he was good at in his new community. He was employed by South Street Seaport, a company situated near Manhattan’s southernmost point. It’s crucial to keep in mind that at this period, the sole means of transportation for goods between America and Europe was by ship, making this a busy hub and the perfect place for my grandfather to establish himself.
Bernard started off as a pier worker and quickly developed a specialty in sewing the gold lace onto the captain’s and crew members’ coats. My grandfather was approached by a man named Sam Weisberg in 1918, around the close of World War I, who was in the business of selling buttons to sailors stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He suggested that they start their own business. Bernard would be an expert in lace and other sewn items, and Mr. Weisberg in buttons and other metal objects.
These individuals decided they had to choose a name for their firm, even though the term Vanguard now holds great significance for all of us. They did little more than open the dictionary and point arbitrarily to a word. They decided that would be the name of their business if they both understood what the word meant. Naturally, they opened the book to the back, where the Vs are located, and that’s how Vanguard came to be. Vanguard had a very basic and inadequate starting from this little beginning, and at no point in time did the company employ more than ten people, including the two proprietors, until the start of WWII in 1941.
